Watch Winders – Do You Need a Watch Winder for Your Watch?
Those of us that enjoy automatic wrist watches may or may not need watch winders. I have an automatic watch myself and I wear it all the time, so I have no need for a winder. Since I am always wearing it, it gets wound continuously.
If I decided to purchase one or two other automatic watches I might invest in a winder though because otherwise they will run down. Then when you decide to wear one of your spare watches you’ll have to set it, which means, for me, going to time.gov and getting the exact time down to the second. It’s kind of a pain so you are better off with a winder if you plan on having more than one watch.
Even if you own only one watch, if you are not wearing it all the time or at least most of the time you might be wise to invest in a winder anyway. If you are just removing it at night to sleep you’ll probably be fine, but if you are only wearing it occasionally it is going to stop running and you’ll have to constantly set it.
I also think that if you wear the watch all the time or use a winder, the watch will keep better time. That may or may not be true, but mine is really accurate.
Now, you can find entry-level watch winders for maybe a hundred dollars or so, or you can spend thousands. Some will be for only one watch and others will accommodate several. It all depends on your needs. Some people actually collect watch winders. These collectible winders are normally made from more expensive materials such as titanium, gold, silver, et cetera. You can also get such features as heaters which will maintain your watch at a temperature near the normal body temp, and some will have displays that are synchronized with the atomic clock.
It is best to make a list of what features you are looking for in a watch winder and then compare prices and features and find the best value for your needs.
